Looking for a timeless getaway just an hour from Toulouse? Head for Puycelsi, a medieval village classified as one of France’s Most Beautiful Villages , in the heart of the Tarn in the Occitanie region. Founded in the 10th century by monks, this fortress proudly watches over the Vère valley and the nearby Grésigne forest.
In addition to its rich cultural past, Puycelsi’s full charm is revealed in autumn, with its narrow streets and ramparts enveloped in the vibrant colors of the season. Perfect for a nature walk, a cultural discovery or simply admiring a memorable sunset.
Puycelsi: a beautiful medieval village steeped in history
From the top of its rocky plateau, Puycelsi proudly overlooks the Vère valley and the Grésigne forest. The fortress is protected by over 800 meters of ramparts surrounding stone, wood and brick houses dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. The village was founded in the 10th century by Benedictine monks from Aurillac Abbey. Then, in 1180, it was sold to the Count of Toulouse, Raymond V, who fortified the strategic site with a castle, which has now disappeared.
Puycelsi withstood several sieges, including one by the English in 1386. During this siege, the villagers, threatened by famine, walked their last pig along the ramparts, making it squeal, thus deceiving the enemy and winning the victory. A small pig carved on the door of Saint-Corneille church recalls this anecdote. The church is also famous for its remarkable blue ceiling, decorated with sacred scenes and acanthus leaves. In fact, the same artists who painted Albi Cathedral painted Saint-Corneille’s ceiling.

Today, with its quiet lanes and traditional half-timbered houses, Puycelsi remains a must-see for lovers of the region’s heritage and history. Another plus point is that this rural commune of 458 inhabitants is only an hour’s drive from Toulouse.
In autumn, the panoramic views reveal the magic of the Grésigne forest.
Beyond its historic charm, Puycelsi is the perfect spot to admire the Grésigne forest – the largest oak forest in southern France – up close. In autumn, this natural setting becomes a living tableau. Reddish, gold and amber foliage illuminate the surrounding landscape, a joy to behold. The village walkway offers a breathtaking view of this sea of autumn colors.

In 2018, Puycelsi joined the Grands Sites Occitanie, underlining its importance to tourism and heritage. Between strolls along heritage trails, discovering the conservatory orchard or contemplative pauses at sunset, the village exudes a peaceful, authentic atmosphere. A perfect destination for lovers of nature, history and escape from the urban hustle and bustle.
