The year 2024 seems to be spoiling us with cosmic and satellite phenomena. After the appearance of two moons at the same time and a haunting shower of shooting stars, the skies over Toulouse will see the appearance of the comet of the century. How can we see it? What’s the best time of day? We tell you all about Tsuchinshan-Atlas, the famous comet of the century that can be observed from Toulouse.
Tsuchinshan-Atlas: an exceptional comet
Since the beginning of this week, the comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas – nicknamed the “comet of the century” – has been fascinating astronomers and the general public alike. Discovered in 2023 by two observatories in China and South Africa, it takes its name from these two bases. It comes from the farthest reaches of the solar system, beyond the orbit of Neptune.
With an estimated diameter of between 20 and 40 kilometers, Tsuchinshan-Atlas is particularly bright, promising an exceptional celestial spectacle. As it approaches the Sun, the comet sublimates, releasing gas and dust to form its spectacular cometary tails. It’s thanks to this phenomenon that we’re lucky enough to be able to catch a glimpse of it!
When and how to observe a comet in Toulouse
To admire this rare phenomenon, Toulouse residents will need to pay close attention from October 11 to 18, 2024. Throughout this period, the comet will be visible to the naked eye. Although it reached its closest point to Earth on October 12, it will still be visible for the next few days.
To observe it, look towards the western horizon just after sunset. The comet will gradually rise into the sky, offering a spectacle that could last from tens of minutes to several hours. For best viewing, choose a spot with clear skies and little light pollution.
Tonight, Monday October 14, the sun will set over Toulouse at 7:12pm, and tomorrow at 7:10pm.
The best observation spots in Toulouse
To take full advantage of this celestial spectacle, there are several places to visit in Toulouse. Here are a few examples:
