A rare architectural heritage to (re)discover
Toulouse’s municipal greenhouses are a masterpiece of the late 19th century, built in 1877 and 1893. In the early 20th century, they were moved to their current location on boulevard de la Marne. Their structure combines iron and glass, providing a luminous setting for the plants. Listed as a Historic Monument, the greenhouses embody an industrial and botanical past that can be explored today through the rotunda, wings and hemicycles of the greenhouse.
Visitors can also learn the secrets of the gardeners who watch over this living heritage. The century-old wisteria, spread over a 30-meter arbor, are a sight to behold in their own right, promising a peaceful, shady atmosphere. The visit is punctuated by advice, demonstrations and a variety of activities, accessible to young and old alike. And it’s all thanks to the Heritage Days on September 20 and 21!
Toulouse’s municipal greenhouses: horticultural production at the service of the city
Every year, the greenhouses produce around 330,000 plants to beautify Toulouse all year round. Flowers, vegetables, fruit trees and even the famous Toulouse violet… 2,000 pots of Toulouse violets are also grown here every year. During Heritage Days, you can meet passionate municipal staff who share their know-how and offer hands-on workshops, including wisteria seed planting. This is also an opportunity to take home free cuttings to extend the botanical experience at home.
