Conducted by Ifop in 2019, a survey showed the proportion of French people in our country who prefer to use the term “pain au chocolat” rather than “chocolatine”. While 83% of French people nationwide use the term “pain au chocolat” to order their favorite viennoiserie from a bakery, only 47% of Occitanie residents prefer to use the expression “chocolatine”… A surprising figure, but one that makes sense given the discord that surrounds this little viennoiserie.
Rather “pain au chocolat” or “chocolatine”?
The poll is not new. However, we’re always on the lookout for information on everything that makes Toulouse and its region so special. A short while ago, we revealed the correct name for this viennoiserie. And yet, between “pain au chocolat” and “chocolatine”, everyone seems to have their own preference. Among our neighbors in Aquitaine, the answer is clear: 63% would prefer the term “chocolatine”.
Once in Occitanie, the figure is most disturbing, for those of us who thought we’d banished “pain au chocolat” from our vocabulary! According to the Ifop survey, 53% of Occitanie residents continue to use this outdated expression, which, let’s face it, would be more apt to define a piece of bread with a bar of chocolate, don’t you think? In any case, the “pain au chocolat” versus “chocolatine” debate seems far from over… In the meantime, this breakfast treat has not finished delighting us. And when in doubt, eat croissants!
