In early March 2025, the British magazine The Times published a ranking of the 25 most beautiful villages in France. With this list, they wanted to highlight rural destinations with authentic charm – far from Paris and its clichés. Among them is Olargues, a village in the Occitanie region that stands out by reaching 5th place! We’d like to tell you more about this beautiful destination, just a 2h30 drive from Toulouse.
Olargues, a charming village in the Occitanie region honored by The Times
Olargues, ranked as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France by The Times, is located in the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc, on the banks of the River Jaur. This medieval village, perched on a rocky platform, offers an exceptional blend of historic architecture and natural scenery.
The Pont du Diable (Devil’s Bridge), built in the 12th century, is an emblematic monument of the village. Classified as a historical monument since 1916, it is associated with a legend that a pact was made with the Devil for its construction. How scary! The bell tower, the former keep of the medieval castle, dominates the village and offers a panoramic view of the Caroux massif.
Olargues’ cobbled streets, picturesque staircases and religious heritage, such as the Saint-Laurent church with its listed organ, bear witness to its rich past! Close to nature, vineyards and olive groves, this village is truly ideal for a getaway!
Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste also in the ranking

Another village in the region to feature in the ranking: Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste. This time in 23rd position. This fortified village, founded in 982, lies at the foot of the Canigou massif. With its Catalan charm, it is famous for its thermal waters, where Napoleon III bathed. Its medieval heritage, notably Fort Lagarde, is also well worth a visit.
Surrounded by forests and nature reserves, it’s the ideal place to discover Catalan culture! A little further away than Olargues, it’s just over 3 hours’ drive from Toulouse, close to the Spanish border. The ideal getaway for an extended weekend?
