Our beloved Tolosa has been given many nicknames. The Pink City, the capital of rugby, the capital of aeronautics, or even Occitania, the land of plenty… Even more poetically, Toulouse is known as the “City of Violets.” To celebrate this flower, symbol of the city in all its splendor, the Place du Capitole will host the highly anticipated Violet Festival on Saturday, February 21 and Sunday, February 22, 2026. Here’s more information about this unmissable event in the Pink City.
The beautiful legend behind the Violet Festival
Did you know? According to a little-known legend, violets were first brought to the region by an Italian soldier. The young man gave them as a gift to his sweetheart, who lived in Saint-Jory, to declare his love for her. It was in this rural town, located about 20 kilometers north of Toulouse, that the first crops were grown and sold in the markets. A blooming gift!
Despite high production in the past, violet cultivation was threatened with extinction. Fortunately, in 1985, agricultural engineer Adrien Roucolle decided to save this beautiful flower from danger. To do so, he set up a plant conservatory and usedin vitro creation. With the same goal in mind, the Terre de Violettes association (founded in 1993) launched its own Violet Festival! Ten years later, in 2003, the city of Toulouse officially took over the festival.
